I've had tunnel vision before I passed out. There was nothing profound or painful or even religious about it. I simply remember having tunnel vision and then waking up on the ground of the gym trying to figure out how I got there. I got up, was pretty embarrassed and just left because I didn't want to have to talk to anyone about it. I went to the doctor to get checked - he said he couldn't find anything wrong with me. He asked me what I was doing at the time; I told him I was doing heavy crunches on an ab machine. He immediately figured out that I triggered some nerve that caused me to pass out.
Anyway, while it was "weird", I didn't see Jesus, angels, bright light, my spirit guides or anything of the sort. But, I did experience true tunnel vision. So, I reckon its not the same thing that people who nearly died experience.
Want to create a really neat tunnel vision experience? Stand or sit in front of a mirror and get about 18" to 2' away and look through the pupils of your reflection until you only see one eye looking back.
